The 3D, helix gene structure was discovered by Rosalind Franklin in 1952 through an X-ray diffraction image called Photograph 51. Sadly, her work was not recognised until after her death, when it was later claimed by Watson and Crick who went on to win a Nobel Prize for their 'discovery' in 1962.
